IGN: Outside of yourself, who do you play with when playing FIFA? Maurice Edu: I like to play with the German side Werder Bremen because they're not a star team like Barcelona or Manchester United. He's an up-and-comer so hopefully he'll have the chance to be in the game one day. IGN: Your younger brother? Maurice Edu: Ya. I can't wait to score goals with myself and have some fun with my character, making all of the moves to get around other players. But now I have one up on him because I'm actually in the game. We would always create our own players in there and build up our stats to see who's player is better. IGN: Are you a big FIFA fan? Maurice Edu: My brother and I play it all the time and we compete against each other all the time. So all of these things together make it a great experience so far and I can't wait for the game to come out in October. You want to have your character in the game and now that's a reality. Everyone plays this game as a kid and if you are into soccer you always want to be a part of it. Maurice Edu, Toronto FC IGN: You have accomplished a lot already in your career, but what does it feel like to be on the cover with Ronaldinho? Maurice Edu: It's a great experience and a great honour to following in the footsteps of players like Ronaldinho, Landon Donovan, Freddy Adu and everyone who's come before me. Edu is in good company previous North American cover athletes include Altidore, Landon Donovan, Francisco Fonseca, Freddy Adu, Omar Bravo, and Oswaldo Sanchez.
As one of the bonuses for being the cover athlete, Edu will serve as one of several playable Miis in FIFA Soccer 09 All-Play, alongside Ronaldinho, Wayne Rooney, Franck Ribery, and others. In college, he starred as a three-year starter for Maryland. Edu, who was the 2007 MLS Rookie of the Year after being the draft's first overall pick, has seven caps for the United States men's national team.
The third cover athlete, replacing Villareal striker Jozy Altidore, is perhaps the player who best bridges the Canadian-American gap: American international Maurice Edu, who plays in midfield for MLS side Toronto FC. Two of the three cover athletes are the same as last year: Ronaldinho, newly of AC Milan, and Guillermo Ochoa, the Mexican international keeper who plays for Club America. IGN can reveal today that the cover of this year's upcoming FIFA 09 in North America will, much like last year, include three players.
